Words Hurt

A sharing of stories, experience and insight at Jubilee United Church

Saturday, February 11, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Often without meaning to, many of us put others down... we make them feel inferior, single them out, shame and humiliate them. This is where bullying starts and the effects are devastating.

Have you ever remarked that something is so "gay" or "retarded"; ever been "jewed or gyped" ... been angered by that "b*tch" or identified somebody by their race instead of their name? You might be surprised how much hurt was actually in your words. On Saturday, February 11th, we are going share together the power of words, hear true stories from people who have been hurt, share our own stories, share a meal – and together, begin to change ourselves and our community as we let go of the words that divide, demean and diminish.

There is no charge for this event. This is for young and old; those who understand and those who have no idea what all fuss is about… come out, bring a friend and together, let's imagine and create a better community.

Sacred Grove Trio
Do you like the music from 'Brother Where Art Thou?' Join us as we celebrate the Christian Tradition Appalachian Style with The Sacred Grove Trio on Sunday February 19. Violinist Laura C. Bates and clarinetist John David Williams are joined by mandolin and guitar virtuoso Adrian Gross to form the Sacred Grove Trio. All three members studied music formally at the University of Toronto and Humber College respectively, and then honed their skills through experiences preforming and collaborating with musicians across Canada. They take joy in playing everywhere from concert halls to camp fires. Members of The Sacred Grove Trio also play with The Boxcar Boys (old time jazz), The Roofhoppers (Klezmer), The Lemon Bucket Orkestra (gypsy jazz) and the Slocan Ramblers (bluegrass). Influenced by gospel, bluegrass and folk music, the Sacred Grove Trio are eagerly exploring a fresh context for old traditions and are excited to share this with their audiences. They encourage you to tap your toes and sing along.

Our first World Music Sunday was Celtic in nature and a huge success! It included a Celtic Group consisting of a family who played many instruments including Uilleann pipes, drum and violin and a special surprise when the two daughters gave us some Highland dancing. Don't miss this enchanting series – all are welcome!

Help Wanted! Does Your Church Participate?

Milk Bag Sleeping Mat Project

Hello,
My name is Christel Schindler and I'm a member of Metropolitan United Church in Toronto. A month ago I became aware of a wonderful project called "Milk Bag Sleeping Mat". If you don't know about it, just google it. I made an announcement in my church to ask folks to save the bags for me. It was a huge success, especially due to the efforts of our minister Dr. John Joseph Mastandrea. He went to his local "Starbucks" outlet and they are giving him a huge amount of bags. I'm bringing them to the UCW at Howard Park United. Unfortunately, there is only one woman who "knits" the mats and I'm the only one who cuts them for her. We are overwhelmed.

My question: Are you aware of others in Toronto who are participating in this wonderful project? We would like to continue with this project but we need help. Kindly let me know!

Looking forward to your reply,
Christel Schindler
