Small Arms Trade Controls:We are continuing our commitment to support the work of Project Ploughshares on protesting the trading of light weapons and small arms. In light of the upcoming United Nations Convention on Light Weapons and Small Arms this summer, we are calling all congregations to participate in this action, using the sample letters we provided to all congregations in February to write to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister for International Trade. These letters continue to be available on the Conference website. Please contact any of the working group's members if you want more information, share concerns, or to find out more about its work.

The Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) is a national network of individuals and organizations in Canada that began in late 1988 to organize opposition to the country's largest weapons bazaar, ARMX. COAT initiated a successful campaign that resulted in all military trade shows being forced off City of Ottawa property. ARMX eventually left Canada altogether thanks in large part to COAT's efforts. Other weapons bazaars are still held in Canada. Throughout the 1990's, COAT continued to organize major events, including anti-war rallies, marches, peace vigils and conferences in Ottawa. COAT has also coordinated campaigns against war/air shows, war toys and Canada's hypocritical role in various U.S-led wars.

The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) is Canada's largest umbrella peace organization. Since its foundation in 1985 the organization has been helping member groups to act as a broad network, in order to provide a strong, coordinated voice for peace issues at the national level.
