KETTLEBY, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Mar 25, 2004) - On Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at a regular meeting of York Presbytery there was discussion regarding the recent anti-Jewish activities in the Greater Toronto Area. Many individuals and congregations announced their intent of participating in the Solidarity Rally sponsored by CJC and UJA at Leah Poslun's Theatre. Following this discussion a motion was passed unanimously, instructing the chair to form a statement which would express the anger and sorrow of York Presbytery regarding the recent acts against the Jewish community in the GTA. The following is that statement. We believe in God. We believe all creation is made by God. We believe that all humanity is created in the image of God. We believe that humanity living together in mutual respect is the desire of God. We believe that the degradation and persecution of any part of the human community goes against the will of God. We believe that acts which serve to intimidate and threaten are a sin against God. We believe that the recent acts of vandalism against certain living spaces, community spaces, and worship spaces of the Jewish community within the bounds of York Presbytery and beyond demand expressions of righteous anger and calls for justice in faithfulness to God. We believe that the division in humanity created by hate, feelings of national, ethnic or religious superiority cause grief for God. We believe that the recent acts of desecration of burial places, and places of religious observance for the Jewish community within the bounds of York Presbytery and beyond demand expressions of sorrow in faithfulness to God. We believe that dialogue, demonstration, hospitality, accompaniment, compassion, and consideration are the way of God. We believe that honouring all humanity, is one way of honouring God. We pray to God for mercy and for guidance. /T/ In Christ, /T/ -30- FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT: (Rev.) M.J. Perry INDUSTRY: NFP -0- |
