Youth Participation

Each presbytery is invited to name up to 15 youth members to the Annual Meeting. This is not a parallel youth program but an integrated meeting based on a commitment to the full participation of young people. Youth members will be part of the main plenary sessions and also participate in a youth stream for part of the meeting. The planning team hopes that drawing together senior youth and young adults will enrich the meeting as a whole and also serve to strengthen Presbytery based youth ministry in the future.

Who should come?

This is an opportunity for senior youth, approximately ages 15-25. Presbyteries will determine their own selection processes. To participate with full voting privileges, each youth member must be a confirmed member of the United Church and elected by the Presbytery. There will be an on-line youth registration form on the Conference website in the spring. Suggested criteria for delegate selection:

Youth between the ages of 15-25 – this is an approximate guide and Presbyteries may discern that someone who is 14 or 26 is the right person to come;
Youth, involved in leadership in church/community, who can reflect on their own faith journey and bring energy and creativity to the quest for leadership for a transformed church.
Given the nature of this meeting with multiple sites and an integrated agenda, a measure of maturity and capacity to be self-directed is required. For example, participants will need to be on time for a bus, organize their belongings, participate in the plenary sessions, etc.

It is our hope that the meeting as a whole will reflect our church's commitment to grow intercultural and diverse communities.

Request to Presbyteries

Presbyteries are asked to:

Determine their own selection process including Presbytery ratification;
Identify one contact person to steer the selection process;
Decide if they will subsidize youth participation or support them in seeking assistance from congregations;
Name one member of the pre-elected youth to join the leadership steering group for the youth stream.
